Oboabona snubbed again

Super Eagles defender Godfery Oboabona will again have to wait for another chance to make his long awaited competitive debut for Turkish side Rizespor as he was again left on the bench in his team’s 1-1 draw away to Galatasary on Saturday.
While Nigeria football fans are worried and the media awash with different explanations on why the Eagles defender is constantly denied any playing time, Oboabona has come out to clear the air that there is no cause for alarm and that his time will ‘soon’ come.
Meanwhile the vital away point secured against Didier Drogba’s Galatasary has temporarily taken Rizespor to the top of the log in the Turkish Super Lig.
Rizespor now have 13 points from six matches while Michael Eneramo’s Besiktas who are second have 12 points albeit from four games.

Boko Haram kills eight in attack on party

Suspected Boko Haram fighters opened fire on a bachelor party in Borno State, killing eight people and wounding several others, witnesses told Reuters yesterday.
Boko Haram is fighting to impose strict Sharia or Islamic law in the north.
President Goodluck Jonathan had ordered an all-out offensive against the insurgents after which they retreated into a hilly area around the Cameroon border from where they stepped up attacks on both soldiers and civilians.
“Three Boko Haram members came on motorcycles at about 11 yesterday night,” Abdul Usman told Reuters in Maiduguri, where he fled after escaping the attack on Tashan Alade village. “They were shooting indiscriminately.”
Security forces have stepped up the offensive against the rebels in the past few days after Boko Haram fighters armed with grenade launchers and anti-aircraft guns attacked an army barracks in Bama.

Obiefule’s Hibernians win heavy to stay top

Obinna Obiefule’s Hibernians ensured they will stay top for of the Malta Premier League for another week with a 4-1 victory over Alfred Effiong’s Qormi on Saturday to record their sixth successive win.
Obiefule, who is yet to get a premier league goal this season, came on as a second half substitute to replace Edison Luis Dos Santos in the 61 minute while his compatriot on the opposite team Effiong was not listed for the encounter.
The Paolites moved six points clear on top the BOV Premier League table ahead of second-placed Valletta and Mosta with an emphatic win that handed Qormi their fifth defeat in six matches.
Hibernians had a perfect start taking the lead after just 35 seconds through Andrew Cohen’s header. Three minutes later, Hibs doubled the score with a low diagonal shot from outside the penalty area by Clayton Failla.
Edison Luis dos Santos increased the lead on 27 minutes with a good header off a cross by Cohen which beat the Qormi goalkeeper.
Hibs made it 4-0 on 67 minutes, thanks to a Rodolfo Soares header off a cross from the right by Clayton Failla.
Substitute Obinna Obiefule was denied by the sticks when he hit the upright with a header off a cross by Marcelo Dias from the right in the 74th minute but the visitors Qormi scored a consolation four minutes from time when Leighton Grech released Jorge Pereira da Silva inside.

Ramon Azeez impresses against Barcelona

Nigeria Youth International Ramon Azeez gave a commendable performance against La
Liga giants Barcelona even though his team, Almeria ended losing 0-2 at home on Saturday.
The 20-year old Nigerian who was brought in just after the hour mark to replace Soriano Marco was impressive in the midfield and even going forward as he did add some bite to the Almeria side that was looking so ordinary before he stepped in.
Defeat for UD Almería on Saturday means they are winless in their last eight matches in La Liga and Braca have now extended their unbeaten run in Spain’s top flight to 19 matches.

Ambrose’s manager fears Barca revenge

Efe Ambrose was in action when Celtic emerged victorious over Barcelona in last year’s UEFA Champions League, but manager Neil Lennon is aware the Spanish giants will be out for revenge when both sides meet again on Tuesday.
The thought that Barca could achieve what eluded them last time, when they could not capitalise on a three-quarter share of possession, has absorbed much of the manager’s thoughts in the build-up to the second Group H match.
“Yes, that goes through my mind 100 per cent. That’s why Fraser Forster is so important. He made some big saves in the game last year, like the one he tipped over from Messi. He made some great saves in the Nou Camp as well”said Lennon on the Telegraph.
“If we go a goal down, can we stay in the game and force them into making a mistake?
What you don’t want is a spanking, and they will come aiming to rectify what went on last year so, yes, I’m very mindful of that as well.
“We’re playing them a little bit earlier this season, but last year they were unbeaten in all competitions. They’re unbeaten this season again.
On Saturday night Barcelona recorded a seventh straight win with a 2-0 victory over Almeria, but the result was overshadowed by an injury to goalscorer Lionel Messi, who held his thigh when he was substituted in the 29th minute.
Celtic too were 5-2 victors over Kilmarnock in a Scottish league game played on Saturday.

Reps condemn poor air conditioning at Lagos Airport

The House of Representatives’ Committee on Aviation yesterday criticised the poor air conditioning system at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos.
Chairperson of the committee Nkieruka Onyejeocha said the committee would in the New Year, do better in its oversight function. She said there were many complaints from Nigerians about the Aviation sector in 2013 to be addressed by the committee in 2014.
“Nigerians should expect more proactive oversight. This means that what most people complained of in 2013 in the sector would be addressed in 2014.”
She commended the remodeling of airports across the country but said a lot needs to be done at the international wing of the Lagos Airport.
“ Many people during Christmas entered this international airport in Lagos and are still sweating inside the terminal building, because the air conditioning system is not working properly.
“This is not right, how much will it take us to get our air conditioning system right and so many other things.”
She said the committee had submitted its recommendations to government on the bullet proof cars purchased by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) for Minister of Aviation Stella Oduah.
The House approved the committee’s recommendation that the President should “review the appointment” of Oduah.
“ Our work ended with the submission of the report on the floor of the House We have finished our own work. It is left for the executive to do its own .”

Ibadan flying object a toy, say police

The Police yesterday described the flying object which flew into a home in Ibadan, Oyo State, as a toy.
Spokesperson Olabisi Ilobanafor said last night that investigation had shown that the electronic object was a Christmas gift for a child in the area.
She said the item was set flying to the glee of the child-owner but unfortunately crashed into a house within the neighbourhood.
Chairman, Ido local government, Professor Joseph Adeniyi Olowofela, accompanied by police, SSS and members of the Defence Corps yesterday recovered the flying object which fell on the roof of a house in Awotan in Ido local government yesterday.
The chairman yesterday described a story published in a newspaper that an object crashed into the home of a resident as “ unfortunate and misleading.”
Prof Olowofela said there was nothing like a crash as reported and that it was untrue that the United States used the object as a spy.
“What happened was that a man was playing with a toy with his son and the toy got lost only to be discovered by a neighbour and instead of searching for the owner of the toy, the neighbour kept it in his home for one week. And the next thing was the report in a newspaper that a spy object lost control and crashed into a residential apartment, “he said.
The owner of the kite- like object, Sunday Folayan, an Electronic engineer and the vice president of Nigeria Internet Registration Association, also expressed shock at the reported crash.
Folayan is the owner of Skynet, an Ibadan-based service provider.
Folayan accompanied the chairman, top local government officials, the Police, the SSS and other security men to recover the toy yesterday.
Folayan, who claimed to have produced many similar toys for his son in the past, explained that he was playing with his son with the battery- propelled toy when it got missing and efforts to retrieve it failed last Sunday.
Giving a description of what the toy looked like, he said: “The weight of the toy is 0.8 kilogrammes with the shape of an I-Pad. It cannot run more than 15 minutes. It is not solar-panelled, but uses battery and it is remote controlled.”

Budget 2014: Govt to spend N11b on national dialogue, World Economic Forum

WHOEVER says talk is cheap has not seen details of the Federal Government’s budget for next year.
The government is to spend N11 billion to host the national dialogue and the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Abuja.
This figure is contained in the details of the 2014 budget breakdown, which states that N7 billion is to be spent on the national dialogue.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on January 18, 2005, requested the approval of N932 million to fund a three-month National Political Reform Conference scheduled to begin mid-February of the same year.
In the breakdown, Obasanjo said delegates would earn N21.68million as sitting allowance and N650. 25 million as allowances in lieu of accommodation. Also included was N1.7million for return tickets from London, Washington, Beijing and Johannesburg, in addition to N28,800 for return flights to Abuja for the inaugural session and subsequent conference meetings.
Delegates, he noted, would be given N14,400 for airport taxi and local transportation within Abuja. There was provision for, at least, two CVU long wheel cars to be hired and fuelled at N2.9 million.
However, in the case of the Dr. Jonathan administration’s national dialogue, there is no breakdown of how the N 7 billion will be spent.
Besides, N4 billion is to be spent on hosting the WEF in Abuja.
These figures are captured under the Service Wide Vote of the Federal Ministry of Finance for 2014, with other expenses submitted for appropriation to the National Assembly. They include N35,409,859,962 to fund the presidential amnesty programme for the reintegration of transformed ex-militants; N546,300,000 for the presidential amnesty programme for the reintegration/transition safety allowances for 3,642 ex-militants (third phase) and N3,699,933,814 as operational cost for the programme.
Besides, the fund allocated to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct elections, N21 billion is voted by the Ministry under its service wide vote for election logistics support. There is also N7 billion proposal for payment of outsourced services.
Under the miscellaneous heading of the ministry’s service wide vote in 2014, N27.5 billion is proposed to be spent on unexplained contingency funding; N5,149,600,000 is set aside for adjustments to the recurrent budget and N5 billion for capital cost adjustments.
The capital expenditure of the ministry’s service wide vote is estimated to cost N433,584,612357. From this amount, N100 billion will go to finance constituency projects for legislators of the National Assembly; N62.8 billion for special intervention; N8 billion for national job creation scheme; N30 billion for the sinking fund for infrastructural development; N14 billion for Nigeria Electricity Liability Management Company (NELMCO) and N16 billion for the bulk trader.
In the budget, N5 billion is budgeted to be spent on “2011 election violence and civil disturbance (damage done to public property and places of worship) and N12.6 billion on special intervention Millennium Development Goals (MDGs 1 and 2).
About N10 billion is to be returned to a special account (not specified) and another N10 billion to fund the Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO) under the electricity provision programme. The government, through the ministry is asking for N25 billion to pay off maturing domestic bonds and N5 billion for payment of local contractors’ debts; N16 billion for Development Finance Institution (DFI) and N4,060,000,000 to fund galaxy backbone infrastructure.

El-Rufai, 103 others on board as plane’s tyre burst

Nigeria was spared another air mishap yesterday. An Aero Contractors Boeing 737-500 plane lost a tyre as it landed at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos.
The plane, with registration number 5N-BLC, was travelling from Abuja. It had on board 104 passengers and crew members, including a former Minister of Federation Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. It, however, landed successfully.
The Accident Investigation Prevention Bureau (AIPB) has commenced investigation.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed the incident in a statement. Its spokesman, Yakubu Dati, said: “A Boeing 737-500 with Registration No 5N-BLC, operated by Aero Contractors landed safely at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, following a loss of pressure in one of the tyres, today (yesterday) December 29, 2013.
“The aircraft, which landed at 10.50am, had a total of 104 passengers and crew members on board.
“The aircraft has since been towed to the apron and the Accident Investigation Prevention Bureau (AIPB) has commenced investigation into the incident.
“We wish to assure all air travellers of their safety and caution against magnifying a manageable incident out of proportion.”
The airliner, through its public relations consultant, SY&T PR, said it regretted “the emotional stress the incident caused its passengers who were on board the aircraft”.
An online statement by the firm said:” Aero regrets the emotional stress caused to our passengers by the puncture of tyre on landing of flight AJ122 from Abuja to Lagos this morning. All passengers on that flight have been contacted via email and SMS to express our regret on the incident.
“Aero Contractors has been in operation for over 54 years with an exemplary safety record. Aero has the utmost confidence in all our team members who are professionally trained to handle emergency situations.
“We are proud at the efficient and excellent manner which all our team members handled this incident, which has been attested to by some passengers on board flight AJ 122.”
El-Rufai, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who travelled to Lagos on a visit to his confidant, Pastor Tunde Bakare of the Latter Rain Assembly, tweeted about the incident. He wrote: “Upon landing in Lagos, our Aero aircraft lost a tyre. The pilot did a great job of coming to a halt suitably. My phones flew under seats. It was amusing hearing shouts of Allah Akbar and Jesus, Jesus, while the dutiful captain was trying to slow the plane down to a safe location.”
He praised the Aero crew for a professional job: “ One of the passengers joked that he knew nothing would happen to us as I was onboard; nice of him, but Allah decides our fate in His way. The Aero pilot was good, the cabin staff calm and professional amid the mild drama and little panic by a few passengers. We Thank God,” he wrote.
